RESULTS The hydrolysis of the flavonoid glycosides to their respective aglycones by saliva was examined using HPLC separation with flavonoid-specific UV detection. This was shown for quercetin 4 -glucoside spiraeoside ; , one of the most important flavonoid glycosides in the human diet, present in large amounts in onions, for example 22 ; . Both the glucoside and its aglycone quercetin had excellent chromatographic properties, and there was little interference from other salivary components at the 370-nm wavelength used. This is an increase of about 300, 000 cubic metres over 2001, or equivalent to a world-scale softwood plywood mill in the US. The reported industry capacity for pine plywood in Brazil totals more than 2.4 million cubic metres. Most likely, pine plywood production has already reached 2.0 million cubic metres in 2003, based on export data. Log supply may be a limiting factor, but success in the export markets may stimulate some upgrades to existing mills, to improve recovery, and at least in some cases plywood mills may prove to be competitive with sawmills in purchasing the available logs. No new world-scale plywood mills are being built or announced for Brazil. The two major producers - Guararapes and Sudati - are investing in upgrades and incremental expansions, but seemingly with a "no debt philosophy". Most expansion and upgrades have been in incremental steps - with smaller-scale Brazilian equipment -rather than in large units. The only foreign investment in veneer plywood in Brazil has been by Boise US million in 2002 ; although their main focus is eucalyptus veneer, not plywood. Other entries in Brazilian plywood from outside interests seem highly unlikely without Brazilian alliances. IV SUMMARY These notes provide an initial overview from the 7-day study tour that visited the major producing regions in Brazil, around the Curitiba region. There is much more to review and with more details to be provided. A new tour is being organized for 2005. Brazil is very interested in overseas visitors, the industry likes North Americans and fellow Southern Hemisphere plantation partners, and we believe Brazil will benefit by developing new business relationships. There are continuing investment opportunities as overseas investors enter the forestry sector. A large percentage of the Brazilian wood products exports go to the US and Asia, but largely through agents. Estimates of endocarditis prevalence vary from 6.3 to 34% of HIV-infected patients who use intravenous drugs, independent of HAART regimens13-15. It is a very unusual condition in other groups of patients at risk for HIV infection and similar, in regard to etiologic agent and clinical manifestations, to the general population with similar sex and age. Losa, et al.16 published eight cases between 1979 and 1999 and reviewed the literature, concluding that a wide etiologic range is found, reflecting different clinical and environmental conditions, and that it is developed in patients with advanced HIV disease. However, the prognosis is not worse than in HIV patients with IE. Infective endocarditis in IVDAs appears by the repetitive bombardment with injected substances and microorganisms in patients with immunological abnormalities and immunosuppression due to intravenous i.v. ; drug use and HIV. It is responsible for 5-20% of hospital admissions and for 5-10% of total deaths. IVDAs often have recurrent endocarditis. Since the first descriptions, the clinical pattern has remained unchanged. It is usually due to Staphylococcus aureus and is more commonly localized to the right side of the heart. Nevertheless, mixed or left-sided valvular infections are also frequent11, 12, 17, 18. In recent years the incidence may be decreasing, probably due to changes in injection practices such as less use of the parenteral route or increased use of sterile needles and syringes ; undertaken to avoid HIV transmission19, 20. However, it is very important to remark that the incidence of IE is related to i.v. drug use and, although the use of illegal drugs is actually decreasing in Europe and the USA, this is still a very important problem in east-European countries and Asia. For this reason, IE will probably be a serious health problem in these countries and consequently in ours due to immigration from the abovementioned nations. In general, IE is reported in the early stages of HIV infection and the impact of its presence and related degree of immunosuppression has not been defined completely. However, Manoff, et al.21 found in 1996 that HIV-related immunodeficiency may independently increase the risk of IE among IVDAs and auranofin!

Near-normalization of EF. In contrast to other studies, however, our patients did not exhibit appreciable changes in diastolic cardiac function. The E-velocity, A-velocity, E A ratio and isovolumeic relaxation time remained within reference values for healthy controls 27 ; . Further, we noted no changes in heart rate or blood pressure, while systemic peripheral resistance demonstrated a trend of reduction. Unlike body composition responses, males and females exhibited similar changes in cardiac function despite different circulating IGF-I levels achieved. These findings are consistent with variable tissue sensitivity to circulating GH 28 ; and IGF-I concentrations, and the relative inability of circulating IGF-I levels to reflect cardiac function improvement. An additional feature of patients suffering from GHD is their impaired sense of psychological well-being. Our study demonstrated sustained improvements in several specific domains, including energy, emotional reactions and social isolation. Again, these improvements did not correlate with nor were predictable by circulating IGF-I levels. Moreover, the incidence of AEs, such as arthralgias, did not correlate with nor were predictable by circulating IGF-I levels. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that modest doses 5 10 mg kg per day ; of long-term GH treatment can result in sustained beneficial effects. Some of the favourable effects such as increases in LBM are reflected by circulating IGF-I levels. Other sustained effects including fat mass reduction, improvement in left ventricular function, hyperlipidemia and enhanced sense of well-being do not correlate with IGF-I levels. Monitoring long-term GH treatment of hypopituitary patients will require even more refined measures to better predict the efficacy and tolerability of GH treatment and bacitracin.
