The cost of Cox-2 selective NSAIDs. Some patients may have had risk factors not measured in our study e.g., smoking or coincident warfarin use ; , which could partially explain why some patients in the lowest-risk decile received a Cox-2 selective NSAID. A potential limitation of the study is extent to which the factors derived from the health plan's computerized databases depart from the actual self-report variables identified in the SCORE tool. Although these factors were not calibrated exactly to those in the SCORE tool, they served as useful markers for identifying characteristics of study members that may be likely to increase their risk for a serious GI complication. As evidenced by lower utilization of traditional NSAIDs in relation to higher Cox-2 scores, we believe the variables were, in fact, valid indicators of individuals' level of risk for serious GI complications. The actual SCORE tool20 may be useful for other managed care organizations attempting to balance cost and quality in the delivery of pharmaceutical care. This study has limitations. First, there were no outcome measures in this study other than the receipt dispensing ; of NSAIDs by type. It is up other researchers to tie predicted risk with receipt of NSAIDs by type and ultimate patient outcomes e.g., GI bleeding incidents sufficient to warrant medical intervention ; . Second, this group-model HMO is probably not typical of other environments, managed care or otherwise. As previously mentioned, several factors make the environment of this study unique, including the use of clinical practice guidelines and the support of these guidelines by drug education pharmacists. Conclusions In summary, we found that patient characteristics identified on the SCORE tool were strongly associated with receiving a Cox-2 selective NSAID among patients with rheumatoid arthritis RA ; and patients with non-RA. These characteristics included increasing.
Oral herpes virus infections are commonly seen by medical and dental professionals. Herpes simplex virus HSV ; is transmitted via salivary and genital secretions. Localized and systemic infections may be induced by the virus. HSV types 1 and 2 are the etiologic agents in most common intraoral herpes virus infections. They can be distinguished on the basis of the distinct antibodies that are formed against each type of virus; classically, HSV 1 causes a majority of cases of oral and pharyngeal infections, while HSV 2 is implicated in most genital and anal infections. Depending on sexual practices, both types can cause primary or recurrent infections in the oral and or genital area. From 1989 to 2001, ENSPG has awarded more than 1800 degrees. 60% of graduating students decided to begin their professional career straight away. The others preferred to add to the training received in the school either a doctorate 30% of the graduates ; or another specialisation 5% of the engineers chose another scientific speciality, very often abroad; 5% chose to obtain a degree in economics or management ; . The standard profile for an ENSPG alumnus a few years after graduation is a Research and Development job in a high technology field corresponding to the School's lines, either in Paris or in the Rhne-Alpes region. But there are many variations, ranging from Theoretical Physics to Marketing and Communication. In a survey of the jobs found after ENSPG by our engineering students, we found: 71% in the research and development field 13% as production, quality and security engineer 10 % in computing 6 % as business engineers and in marketing.

Production at any of the concentrations tested. One of the other possible action mechanisms of nicorandil on islet b-cell protection is a PARP-1 inhibitory effect. Nicorandil has both nitrate and nicotinamide moieties, and nicotinamide has been reported as a PARP-1 inhibitor. PARP-1 knockout mice and mice treated with nicotinamide are protected against the STZinduced diabetogenic effect 20, 39 ; . In our experiment, nicorandil did not show an inhibitory effect on PARP-1. This result indicated that the protective mechanisms of nicorandil and nicotinamide on islet b-cells damaged by STZ might be different. The findings of our in vivo and in vitro studies have suggested that nicorandil improved STZ-induced diabetes via a radical scavenging effect rather than via inhibition of energy consumption of b-cells achieved by PCO action or PARP-1 inhibition. The Ontario Department of Agriculture formally established a grape breeding programme in 1913 to improve shipping quality. Greenhouse vinifera varieties were used with existing labrusca table varieties, but the hybrids were too winter tender for commercial purposes. As the wine industry became more important, the breeding programme focussed on colour stability but generally stayed within labrusca families. However, as fortified wine sales gave way to table wine, the available labrusca varieties with poor colour and strong flavours became unacceptable. The arrival of the Munson hybrids and a large collection of complex interspecific hybrids from the Seibel Seyve-Villard nurseries in France marked a major turning point in the Ontario industry and the HRIO UG breeding programme Bradt, 1970 ; . Munson had successfully used many indigenous species and found the flavours of labrusca and other wild species interesting and not unpleasant for table grapes. The French breeders were not so charitable because they were interested in developing wine grapes. Seibel, in particular, used 1st and 2nd generation species crosses from earlier workers and crossed these with highly productive vinifera varieties. These he rigorously selected for flavour, disease resistance and high yield. He then intercrossed these hybrid families and selected again, using the same criteria. Seyve Villard used many of Seibel's intermediate hybrids, intercrossed them and proceeded similarly. As a result, their advanced selections had extremely complex genealogies but very low percentages of labrusca influence Galet, 1988 ; . The breeding programme at Vineland has used French hybrids for one if not both parents in wine grape breeding since the late 1940's. Although varieties introduced were hardy and disease tolerant - Vincent 1967 ; , Ventura 1974 ; , Veeblanc 1977 ; , Vivant 1983 ; - their usefulness was short lived because of their labrusca lineage and mild labrusca flavours. In order to objectively determine the labrusca flavour profile, a chemical index was developed Fuleki, 1982 ; . The Vineland Grape Flavour Index VGFI ; measured methyl anthranilate and total volatile esters and calculated an index of relative labrusca flavour. Threshold organoleptic detection of labrusca flavour was VGFI 15. This value could be determined using fresh juice, eliminating the necessity of microvinification for first test seedlings. Rigorous use of this technique has resulted in selections with mean VGFI ratings of 0-1 and considered free of labrusca flavour. Back crossing advanced selections to vinifera is now used to reduce the "hybrid" nature of some selections and improve the colour profile Fisher and Fuleki, 2000 ; . Other chemical analyses are used to track anthocyanin and terpene levels and the presence of monoor di-glucosides Fuleki, 1990 ; . In addition to appropriate flavours, selections must have acceptable levels of winter survival. Artificial freezing techniques have been used to screen potential candidates Fisher et al., 1986; Fisher and Piott, 2000 ; . Dormant canes are frozen through a range of temperatures to -25C and material with promise is sent to Quebec or eastern Ontario for test under extreme winters and a short, intense growing season. Disease resistance tolerance is also very important but specific screening techniques are not used at Vineland. Fungicide applications are halted after the second post-bloom spray, natural epidemics are allowed to develop and vines are then assessed after harvest. This skews the selection for powdery mildew Uncinula necator Schw. ; Burr ; tolerance and does not directly address downy mildew Plasmopara viticola Berk and factive.

Ross J. Harper, MSci * , Jos R. Almirall, MS, PhD, and Kenneth G. Furton, PhD, Department of Chemistry, Florida International University, University Park, Miami, FL This presentation will outline the research approach presently being performed for the scientific validation of detector dog performance for the detection of explosives. Research currently focuses upon the vapor headspace analysis of a variety of explosives by SPME-GC MS to facilitate dog trials of individual headspace components. A closer look has also been taken at the analysis of explosives and blast debris by SPME-GC MS MS. Analysis and identification of the headspace `fingerprint' of a variety of explosives, followed by double-blind dog trials of the individual components have been performed in an attempt to isolate and understand the target compounds to which the dog is sensitive. Studies to compare commonly used training aids with the actual target explosive have also been undertaken to determine suitability and effectiveness. The vapor headspace of a range of explosives have been analyzed using non-equilibrium rapid Solid Phase Micro Extraction GC MS. Samples of a variety of explosives have been obtained from local law enforcement agencies for odor signature determination. The odor signature have been tested at time intervals to observe sample degradation under different conditions to study any effect that this may have on the dogs' detection performance. Studies have also been performed using HPLC MS to observe the non-volatiles within the samples. Diffusion studies are executed to observe the production and maintenance of an active odor headspace above the explosive media.

Part II of this study documents the response of aquatic invertebrates to the effects of wetland boardwalks treated with chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate, and ammoniacal copper quat. This aspect of the study was designed to assess changes in invertebrate communities under the worst possible conditions: large surface areas of treated wood located in and adjacent to water of low hardness and alkalinity that flows very slowly over fine-grained sediments. The experimental variables were total species richness total number of taxa ; , total sample abundance number of organisms sample ; , dominant sample abundance 1% total specimens in vegetation, artificial substrate, and infaunal samples ; , and Shannon's and Pielou's indices. The infaunal samples contained the largest mean number of animals and the highest total taxa richness. Although measurable increases occurred in water column and sediment preservative concentrations, no taxa were excluded or significantly reduced in number by any preservative treatment and fennel.

Ezetimibe caused a mean percentage change from baseline to endpoint in direct LDL-C of approximately -18%, relative to an increase of 1% with placebo. This result is similar to those of previous, smaller trials, 5, 15 wherein mean percentage changes from baseline to endpoint of approximately -16 to -19% were observed over 812 weeks with the 10-mg dose. Present results are also similar to a companion study of equivalent size and design, 16 wherein the mean percentage change from baseline to endpoint was -17%. LDL-C reduction was apparent at 2 weeks and was maintained to endpoint. Thus, the results of controlled trials with ezetimibe monotherapy have been uniformly positive and consistent. Approximately 62% of the ezetimibe-treated patients had a mean percentage reduction from baseline to endpoint in direct LDL-C of at least 15%, compared with 8% of the placebo recipients. This result for ezetimibe is consistent with that in the companion trial16 approximately 60% ; and with the results of the three earlier Phase II trials 6178% ; .5, 15 In this trial and the others cited above, the concentration of apo B decreased significantly relative to placebo. Because apo B is the major protein constituent of low-density lipoproteins, and relatively little of this molecule is found in other lipoprotein fractions in patients without hypertriglyceridemia, ezetimibe would appear to lower LDL-C at least partially by decreasing the number of circulating LDL-C particles and ferret.

Thus interfering with the activity of enzymes needed for microbial growth. Another dicationic drug, pentamidine, was used as the basis for development of pafuramidine, with the idea to eliminate toxicity and improve other properties including oral bioavailability of the predecessor compound. The tablet formulation also is designed to withstand tropical conditions, Immtech said. The better side effect profile would appear to put pafuramidine, too, in a favorable competitive position against TMP-SMX and other treatment options for PCP that are not well tolerated, Wolf said, a result that would lead to increased patient compliance. Wolf said estimates show there currently are 27, 000 HIV patients in the U.S. being treated for PCP. Another 147, 000 HIV patients are undergoing prophylactic treatment for PCP, he said. Par estimated mortality rates in individuals with AIDS during the initial PCP infection at 10 percent to 20 percent, with substantially higher rates when mechanically assisted breathing is needed. The mortality rate for PCP is even higher among nonAIDS patients with compromised immune systems, such as those receiving chemotherapy or organ transplantations, Par noted. Pafuramidine is being developed by a consortium that includes the University of North Carolina, Georgia State University, the Swiss Tropical Institute and the University of Glasgow. Development also has been supported by grant funding from U.S government agencies and others. Immtech's stock AMEX: IMM ; gained 36 cents Tuesday, or 5.2 percent, to close at .25.
