Resorcinol appears to be a sensitizer, producing allergic dermatitis in a small proportion of individuals exposed repeatedly to the compound in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products Eierman et al., 1982; Vilaplana et al., 1991; Nakagawa et al., 1992; Pecegueiro, 1992; Massone et al., 1993; Barbaud et al., 1995 ; . Fisher 1982 ; characterizes this as a rare event, and Eierman et al. 1982 ; report that in a prospective study of dermatitis 487 cases in 179, 800 dermatology patients ; from any cosmetic, only 8 per cent of the cases were allergic reactions. Challenge of 149 of the dermatitis cases revealed only one positive reaction to resorcinol. Goossens et al. 1999 ; reported on data from 475 patients with allergic contact reaction to cosmetics. Only one case out of the 475 cases was allergic to resorcinol. Four out of 839 patients or 0.5 per cent had an allergic reaction to resorcinol when patch tested over a sevenyear period Tarvainen, 1995 ; . Patch tests were also used to evaluate sensitization to allergens, vehicles and preservatives present in creams and ointments used to treat leg ulcers Kokelj and Cantarutti, 1986 ; . Among 25 patients tested, resorcinol, considered a vehicle, did not test positive. Guerra et al. 1992a ; challenged individuals with contact dermatitis with resorcinol. Only 0.4 per cent one case out of 261 clients ; tested positive to resorcinol Guerra et al., 1992a ; . In hairdressers with dermatitis, Guerra et al. 1992b ; reported only a 1.3 per cent incidence of sensitization to resorcinol. Frosch et al. 1993 ; reported 0.6 per cent sensitization to resorcinol among European hairdressers. Resorcinol content of cosmetic products is typically 0.1 - 1 per cent 1, 000 - 10, 000 mg kg ; and may be greater CIR, 1985 ; . Allergic reactions at lower resorcinol concentrations of environmental relevance would presumably be more rare. Contact sensitization is not a systemic effect, because it occurs only in the skin at the point of contact. It does not occur after systemic doses. Therefore, dermal contact sensitivity is not a concern when deriving an oral RfD. 5.1.3 Thyrotoxicity It has been reported that humans using topical resorcinol products containing high concentrations of resorcinol often on ulcerated or otherwise damaged skin for prolonged periods may experience interference with thyroid function, including goiter Bull and Fraser, 1950; Hart and MacLagen, 1951; Hobson, 1951; Thomas and Gisburn, 1961; Katin et al., 1977 ; . In a sense, then, for Socrates, there is no ethical good or evil in things in the world--things are what they are. Instead, "knowledge" is considered to be materially equivalent to what is "good, " "excellence, " or "aret, " and "ignorance" is considered to be materially equivalent to "evil" or what is "harmful to our soul." Since we never intentionally harm ourselves, if harm happens to us, then, at some point, we had to have acted with a lack of knowledge. In this manner, Socrates concludes, what to many persons seems paradoxical, that we are "morally responsible" for obtaining all the knowledge we can. In this sense, ignorance is no excuse. Endovascular measurements were not performed; the other procedures were the same as in the other two groups. After completion of the hospital trial, patients of the three groups were discharged on a therapeutic regimen of the two compounds every 6 hours. A longterm follow-up was begun and accomplished by monthly visits to our Cardiology Clinic, during which the pressure was checked, the ECG was recorded and the drugs were supplied. Visits were generally performed 4 hours after the morning doses. A regular follow-up could be carried out in 22 of the 29 patients investigated in the hospital.
INTRODUCTION The discovery of penicillin and further development of antibiotic therapy was one of the most important achievements of last century. Novel antibiotics are nevertheless a real modern need, mainly for emergent economy countries where infectious sickness still causes a considerable number of deaths. The increasing amount of people who have imunossupressing or some metabolic diseases, the growing bacterial resistance phenomenon, the collateral effects of some antimicrobial drugs and the high cost of a complete and effective antimicrobial program contribute to this necessity. Discussion It has recently been proposed that compounds such as pinacidil, BRL 34915, and minoxidil represent a new class of antihypertensive agents that have as their primary mechanism of action the opening of K + channels in the membrane of vascular smooth muscle cells.21 This hypothesis is based on the observations that 1 ; relaxation is endothelium independent, 2 ; each compound is more effective in relaxing agonist-induced contractions compared with K + -induced contractions, 3 ; each compound increases Rb efflux from vascular muscle, and 4 ; relaxation is antagonized by K + blockers such as TEA.10-22 In addition, in the case of BRL 34915 and pinacidil, microelectrode studies have demonstrated that these compounds produce a hyperpolarization of the resting membrane potential of vascular smooth muscle at doses that are similar to those that antagonize agonist-induced contractions.23-24 It is not known if MNXS exerts a similar effect on the resting membrane potential of VSMCs. The objective of our studies was to determine if MNXS produces changes in the resting membrane potential of vascular smooth muscle at doses that are effective in antagonizing NE-induced contractures and to determine if such changes in membrane potential are mediated by alterations in membrane K + conductance. Our initial contractile studies on intact muscle strips established that MNXS has a similar potency for antagonizing NE-induced contractions in rabbit portal vein as was found previously in rabbit superior mesenteric artery.10 It was also found that MNXS reduced both the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous mechanical events in this tissue. Measurements of resting membrane potentials in isolated VSMCs of rabbit portal vein showed that concentrations of MNXS alone, which are effective in reducing NE-induced contractions, produce significant hyperpolarization of the resting membrane potential 10-15 mV ; and effectively antagonize NE-induced depolarization of the resting membrane potential. As all of the opposition Deputies surrounded the Speaker's desk and continued to shout disruptively, the Democratic Party MPs approved the parliamentary election law by a vote of 74-0 without a single word of explanation or debate and concluded the session, leaving the stunned and frustrated opposition MPs inside to decide their next move. The following day, President Berisha returned from his foreign visits and immediately signed the new election law. The Socialists later challenged the new election law in the Constitutional Court, which decided in the Government's favor. Election Law Changes There were three major changes in the law governing parliamentary elections: a shift away from a proportional system to a majoritarian system; the access to state-controlled television by opposition political parties; and the composition and operation of the electoral commissions at all levels. Under the law governing the parliamentary elections in March 1992, Parliament was composed of 140 members, 100 of whom would be elected directly from constituency districts and the remaining 40 selected on a proportional basis from party lists. For parties that received at least four percent of the total vote, the 40 seats from the party lists would be awarded under a formula which served to make a "correction" so that the final distribution of seats would reflect the overall percentage of votes received by each party. In other words, the 40 proportional seats were used as a re-balancing mechanism that eliminated the deviation between the percentage of votes a party received and the percentage of seats it held in Parliament. When the Socialist Party won 25 percent of the overall vote in the 1992 elections, but only six of 100 seats in the direct elections, they were compensated with an additional 32 of the 40 seats from their proportional list in order to give them an overall percentage of 27 percent in Parliament.1 Similarly, the Democratic Party which won 62 percent of the overall vote in the 1992 elections, but 90 of the 100 seats in direct elections, was awarded just two additional seats from the proportional side of the ballot party list. Thus, this system had the practical effect of insuring that Parliament reflected the results of the elections on a proportional basis for all parties that crossed the four percent threshold. In the public debate leading up to the May 1996 Parliamentary elections, the most important point for every political party except the ruling Democratic Party ; was to retain the proportional component of the system and the four percent threshold. We came to two basic conclusions. First, -syn alters compartmentalization of presynaptic dopamine and decreases capacity of the dopamine storage pool. Second, increase of the refilling rate of the RRP compensates for altered dopamine compartmentalization.
